  Would you consider a +127 Strength, -132 Charisma, +78 Finesse, +64 Damage gadget with a +9% missle damage refinement; better than a gadget that has -127 Strength, +132 Charisma, -78 Finesse, -64 Damage gadget with a +15% missle damage refinement?

depends on your stats and where you want your ratio to go. Based on numbers above, the first one gives gains in overall skill points, so I would say that one.

I agree. Go with the better stats. You can always get a better refinement, and if the stats aren't where you want them you can redistribute them with the washing machine. Depending on how frugal you are it may take some time, in which case you'll probably get an even better piece before you finish.

To add to the above, without knowing what your stats before using the gear are, it's nearly impossible to say which is better. Ideally, you want your stat ratio to look something like this:

 

 

Finesse should be the highest stat, with the others stepping down around 20% from the next. So in that order, Finesse, Charisma, Stamina and, finally Strength. So it really depends on where your ratio is and what that piece of gear does to it. And if the total SP the gear adds is significantly higher than the gear you have on now, but borks up your ratio, like Rosy said, you can put it in the washing machine until it gives you what you want.

I disagree, Ginger. The only thing that matters is the overall number of skills gained, and the refinement on the piece. WHERE the skills are NOW on your equipment can be changed - and so are irrelevant to determining which piece is best.

 

"Oh, I hate the washing machine, don't ever want to use it". Well, the top players know how to use it to tune our builds. If you want to be a top player, too - figure out how to use it, and you will gain a few more percent of optimization.

 

Hint: The washing machine is best used to fix your build, not an individual item. Refine in your inventory, and when you get a +skills piece with an acceptable refine, equip it immediately. Then look at your overall build, and wash something you are wearing to correct any imbalances. This is not necessarily the same as the piece you newly equipped. After all, you don't care which piece donates which skill points, you just want your totals to follow your desired curve.
