I think they should implement the same anti-spam technique here that they did on the UK forums.

Something needs to be done. What's so onerous about the UK forum's method?

Those websites that can give viruses do need to go, yes. We wouldn't want players to lose their accounts because some assholes who want to spam  ;)

(btw spam is always on every forum there is. An anti-spam should always be needed in forums)

I'm much less concerned about people becoming overwhelmed with desire for whatever ridiculous product is being marketed and following the link. There's no helping some people...

But it's really irritating to have forums full of spam which seems to stick around for hours and days at a time. It would also be silly not to be able to put a link or image or whatever into a post.

A decent system would temporarily remove a post once reported a couple of times until a mod has had the chance to approve/deny it. Ideally that happens within a very short time period. Just schedule mods around the clock so that posts get reviewed within a couple of hours at the most. You could offer free boosts or unlimited free washing machine uses or something and you'd get dedicated moderators you don't have to pay.

Good morning,

how are you doing? :)

Well, yes - we must always try to avoid methods to control the spam that exists in our foruns. However, as you guys mentioned, in UK forum it was needed because it was too much and keeping the community without spam was really hard without the new anti-spam feature.

Here, since three or two weeks ago, it's being tough to control it because we have less moderators, less true content being published and a bigger amount of spam. Therefore, the anti-spam feature is now implemented in our US community and we hope from now on to see you often around here.

Best regards.

It means that a player has to get their first time post approved by a moderator before it becomes visible.  After that, they can post freely.

Since spammers generally create a throwaway account that they only use once, this effectively stops their accounts from posting.

(My bad, I should have described it.  Doesn't everyone read both the UK and US forums?  LOL)

That is completely right - until now this feature has been working properly in several markets and avoiding that "true" members from see spam constantly.

Best regards.

The problem I see with requiring an approved post before free posting is enabled, is that it seems likely to increase game-related spam posts.

If I were I a spammer, I'd just post something like:

"What should I spend my money on?"

"How do I create a character?"

"Can I change my character after its created?"

"What's the highest level you can reach?"

"I don't like the game, can I delete my account?"

"What's the best build?"

"Why do things cost so much"

"What does it take to win at this game?"

I could come up with a million of these. If all it takes is one post then one semi-legit sounding post is easy to come up with even if you have no idea what the game is and haven't even created an account yet.

Then we have really useless questions cluttering up the place on top of the spam. Is this something you've seen an increase of on the UK server?

NOTE TO SPAMMERS: I expect $0.01 for royalties every time you use something from the above list!!

There is no antispam technique that catches everything. Congratulations, you have come up with a simple way for a spammer to get a few messages through. But to what end?

The moderators will catch them and delete the account.

And then the spammer is going to have to post a game related question.

Wait for it to get approved.

And then they can post a few more spam messages.

Believe me, they aren't going to do that.  Spammers are just running an autoposting program against a list. They don't actually know or care if it succeeds against any particular one.

In the meantime, a simple administrative process stops them dead in their tracks.
